The paper focuses on studying whether there is agreement between a controlled vocabulary of musical genres, defined by a group of experts (taxonomy) and the collaborative effort of a community (social tagging). This research has been written in the context of the work that Universitat Pompeu Fabra is doing in VARIAZIONI project, dealing with the definition of the metadata model for VARIAZIONI (WP2) and the gathering of tags from users and external sources (WP5).

    Presentation of VARIAZIONI work related to WP5. This paper presents some experiments to analyse the popularity effect in music recommendation. The results from the experiments reveal that, as expected by its inherent social component, the collaborative filtering approach is prone to popularity. This has some consequences on the discovery ratio as well as in the Long Tail navigation. On the other hand, in both content -based and human expert– based approaches artists are linked independently of their popularity. This research has been written in the context of the work that Universitat Pompeu Fabra is doing in VARIAZIONI project, dealing with the gathering of tags from users and external sources (WP5).
